Red spider mite is a problem in greenhouses and conservatories, they thrive in hot, dry conditions. The mites, which are tiny only 1 mm long, feed on the plant causing the leaves to mottle and go brown. When the infestation is bad you can see webbing at the tops of effected plants and the tiny mites moving around.
The biological control we offer is Phytoseiulus. It is an 8 legged mite which feeds on red spider mites, consuming up to five adults or twenty eggs a day. A minimum temperature of 20°C is required for the control to work. When you receive your Phytoseiulus, sprinkle them over the infested plants. If any of the mites drop off, they should climb to where they need to be. The pack contains 1000 mites to treat 100 sq. metres and has a shelf life of 7 days but as with all live products we recommend using them as soon as they arrive.
Please note, higher temperatures (above 30°C or 86°F) or dry weather (humidity below 60 %) favours the red spider mite while the biological control finds these conditions more difficult. Low humidity causes the predatory mite’s eggs to shrivel. Very hot temperatures can drive the mites away. Spraying a fine mist of cold water over your plants every evening will create conditions that help the predatory mites to thrive.
