For more than six decades, Garden Organic has been at the forefront of sustainable horticulture, encouraging people to try organic growing methods – to improve soil health, grow their own food and nurture nature.

With 65 years of expertise at its fingertips, the charity uses research and demonstration to highlight best organic practice in a friendly and accessible way. Its website at gardenorganic.org.uk is a wealth of free information and advice on soil management, composting, peat-free growing, organic ways to tackle ‘pests’, seed saving, and much more.

As well as encouraging people to garden using organic methods, Garden Organic is also home to the Heritage Seed Library (HSL) – a living library of heritage and heirloom seeds. The HSL maintains the National Collection of Heritage Vegetables and the National Plant Collection of Calendula, conserving varieties that are not commercially available and would otherwise be lost. Its work is critical in preserving food security and plant diversity.

You can get involved with Garden Organic in several ways, through its outreach programmes in schools, prisons and Compost Demonstration sites around the UK, and volunteering. There’s also regular citizen science projects and research.

Become a member of the charity and you will receive exclusive access to one-to-one expert advice, a regular members’ magazine and partner garden and organic product discounts – including 10% off seeds with Tamar Organics plus discounts with a range of Garden Organic’s partners.

Add HSL support to your membership and you can also help fund heritage seed conservation – and receive access to an annual Seed List from which you can choose six free packs of heritage vegetable seed from 150 varieties.
