Here at Tamar Organics we sent a lot of parcels. When it comes to packaging, we try to make the most environmentally conscious choices we can. This means using recycled and recyclable packaging options where possible. This is a quick explanation of what we use to package your orders and what you can expect to find in your parcel.

Seed packets

Our seed packets are made from 100% recycled and recyclable paper. Some of our smallest seeds come in glassine bags. These are made from cellulose and can be put in your compost or food waste.

Boxes

Our boxes and large letter pip boxes come from a local company in Cornwall and are completely recyclable. We also recycle boxes that our deliveries come in where possible.

Novia wraps

We package some of our small orders in Novia wraps which are completely recyclable cardboard. Once used, you can put them in your normal recycling, or compost.

Paper bags and sacks

We package the small orders of Autumn onions, garlic, shallots and artichokes in paper bags. These can be composted or recycled with paper once you have planted them.

Shredded paper

To keep your seeds safe, we shred our waste paper and use it to fill gaps in boxes so things can’t move during transit. This can be composted, put into paper recycling or used as a bed for a hamster.

Yellow label backs

We print a lot of labels and we therefore end up with a lot of label backs. Unfortunately, it cannot yet be recycled, so instead of throwing them away, we scrunch them up and give it a second life as packaging to keep your items safe in transit. They are a really effective packaging solution and stops it from being single use. Once you have your order they can go in the general waste, or be reused as packaging again.

Packing peanuts

All the packing peanuts we use are completely compostable. Once you’ve finished using them, they can go in your compost bin or food waste recycling system.

Compostable bags

We sometimes package larger quantities of plant material in compostable bags. These can be safely put into your home composting system or food waste collection. If you are unable to compost them, then please put them in the general waste and not in the recycling.

Biodegradable bags

We have old stock of biodegradable bags that we are using up where appropriate. These bags are not compostable and should be disposed of in your general waste once you receive your order. These cannot be recycled with plastic bags.

Reusable zip ties

We are trialling reusable zip ties on our large sacks that we send our composts in. If we use one on your order, we will attach a sticker to tell you it is reusable, so you can keep it and use it again.

Sealed air packaging

We will reuse packaging from orders sent to us wherever possible. Sealed air pockets are a common packaging that gets delivered to us and we have found it to be useful when packaging awkwardly sized items. It says it is recyclable, but from a bit of research we don’t believe it is possible to recycle them in this country.

Newspaper

We use newspaper to wrap soft fruit bushes, onion plantlets, comfrey, lawn chamomile and horseradish plants. This keeps them moist and protected as they make their way to you. Newspaper is safe to add to your compost bin or can recycled with your paper and card.

Plastic bags

We reuse old plastic bags to send liquids, to avoid any leaks during transit. These bags will vary in materials, so cannot be guaranteed to be recyclable. Please reuse where possible and dispose of in the general waste.
