Caterpillars of certain butterflies, moths and sawflies can be a real problem particularly to cabbages and gooseberries. A physical barrier of mesh is good protection, but if that fails you may want to try the biological control. Cutworms, which attack plants at soil level, can be a problem to a wide range of plants and barrier methods are not effective.
This biological control is called carpocapsae system. The pack contains 5 million nematodes and will treat an area up to 60m2. A temperature of at least 14°C is required.
The nematodes come in a gel which you will mix with water to make a solution. Spray the solution onto leaves for caterpillars and onto soil for cutworms. Do this when the soil is wet and out of strong sunlight, otherwise the nematodes will not survive.
