The striking orange heads of the Carthamus Tinctorius (sometimes known as Safflower) bear more than a passing resemblance to the Scottish Thistle.
This annual is a favourite for bees and it’s a quick grower too – blooming at around 12 weeks after planting.
It is a fantastic cut flower and works well in dried arrangements. It also boasts many practical uses, seeing it cultivated for use in cooking oil and cosmetics.
How to grow:
Carthamus Tinctorius seed can be directly sown into the growing site between March and July. Directly sow 1cm deep into a prepared soil which has been raked to a fine tilth. Alternatively, sow the seed into 7cm pots inside, before transplanting the flowers into a sun-covered area when they are large enough to handle. Please allow 20cm between each plant.
